Position Overview:
The Attorney/Business Advisor position plays an important role within Hinshaw Consulting and the firm’s Business Development Center. The Attorney/Business Advisor participates actively in both the Planning and the Execution Phases of client projects. In the Planning phase the Attorney/Business Advisor will help (1) identify key project drivers and (2) participate in the project mapping process. In the Execution phase, the Attorney/Business Advisor will perform those duties that are assigned to the Attorney/Business Advisor and will participate as an active team member of one or more client engagement teams. On many projects, the Attorney/Business Advisor may be expected to be responsible for overall management of specific client matters. In this capacity the Attorney/Business Advisor will take the lead in scoping, staffing, budgeting, and monitoring a matter’s progress. The Attorney/Business Advisor is expected to have specific expertise in one or more of Hinshaw Consulting’s service lines: Business Services, Construction, Finance, Franchising, Governance, Risk, & Compliance, Healthcare, Legislative Coordination & Economic Development, Mergers & Acquisitions, Public & Municipal Advisory Services, Real Estate & Facilities, Site Selection, and State & Local Government Services as well as be a licensed attorney who is able to handle certain legal aspects of the client representation.
Position Objective:
The primary objectives of the Attorney/Business Advisor position are (1) to manage matters to ensure the effective scoping, staffing, budgeting and monitoring of matters resulting in on-time, on-budget delivery of client commitments – including monitoring progress against client commitments and making sure that any scope creep is documented and approved by the client or is otherwise minimized and (2) to participate on client and internal projects and provide high quality professional services to assist clients and the firm in achieving their priority objectives.
Reporting Structure:
The Attorney/Business Advisor reports to the Chief Operating Officer – Hinshaw Consulting.
Position Qualifications:
The successful candidate is expected to have the following qualifications for the position:
- Personality: High integrity, personable, team-player, results-oriented, highly structured
- Expertise: The Attorney/Business Advisor should be a licensed attorney with specific subject matter expertise (legal and or business) in one of Consulting’s core or developing service lines (e.g. Business Services, Construction, Finance, Franchising, Governance, Risk, & Compliance, Healthcare, Legislative Coordination & Economic Development, Mergers & Acquisitions, Public & Municipal Advisory Services, Real Estate & Facilities, Site Selection, and State & Local Government Services). The ideal candidate will be a licensed attorney with substantial experience in the operations and management aspects of businesses.
- Special credentials: PMI (or similar organization) certification in Project Management and/or Six Sigma is a plus.
- Education: A law school graduate (JD) with four year-degree in business, systems engineering, or other similar degree is required. An advanced degree (MBA and/or technical Masters) is a plus.
- Communications Skills: Well-honed Communications skills are required (Persuasion; Public Speaking; Active Listening; Writing). The candidate must have the ability to present ideas and communicate clearly and persuasively both verbally and in written form.
- Interpersonal: (Networking; Collaboration; Relationship Building). The Attorney/Business Advisor must be able to take independent initiative in leading projects and must be able to work collaboratively in a team environment, possessing the ability to keep other team members on track and on schedule for deliverables.
- Research Skills: the Attorney/Business Advisor must have strong research and strategic analysis skills.
- Personal Effectiveness (Follow Through on Commitments; Setting Priorities; Self-motivation; Integrity; Professionalism). The Attorney/Business Advisor must be detail oriented, proactive, intellectually curious, self-directed and able to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines. The Attorney/Business Advisor must also have excellent organizational/performance monitoring skills.
- Technical (Microsoft Office, Research Tools) the Attorney/Business Advisor must be highly proficient with PowerPoint, Excel and Word. The Attorney/Business Advisor must also possess adequate project management skills/ability to reasonably work within a fast-paced environment and keep things moving forward.
Key responsibilities and activities of Attorney/Business Advisor Position:
- The Attorney/Business Advisor participates actively in both the Planning and the Execution Phases of client projects. In the Planning phase the Attorney/Business Advisor will help (1) identify key project drivers and (2) participate in the project mapping process. In the Execution phase, the Attorney/Business Advisor will perform those duties that are assigned to the Attorney/Business Advisor and will participate as an active team member of one or more client engagement teams. Among other responsibilities, the Attorney/Business Advisor will be a technical consultant in areas that leverage the Attorney/Business Advisor’s specific areas of expertise. On many projects, the Attorney/Business Advisor may be expected to be responsible for overall management of specific client matters. In this capacity the Attorney/Business Advisor will take the lead in scoping, staffing, budgeting, and monitoring a matter’s progress.
- As a participant in the Business Development Center, the Attorney/Business Advisor will be responsible for working with H&C attorneys and professionals to develop integrated project plans for potential client engagements including project scoping, project staffing, and project budgeting.
- As a licensed attorney, the Attorney/Business Advisor will handle certain legal aspects of the client representation.
