MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

At least six years in position of Associate Resolutions Counsel or equivalent substitute experience before coming to UE
Law degree and relevant experience in employment law, personal injury torts, litigation and education issues
Strong written and oral communications
Strong legal analysis and problem-solving skills
Good negotiation and advocacy skills
Effective litigation manager
Knowledge of substantive law of higher education and ability to produce presentations for members using specialized knowledge
Consistent high level of teamwork
Ability to create and implement proactive strategies that result in favorable claims resolutions for UE and its members
The ability to thrive in an atmosphere of constant change

III.           MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESClaims File Responsibilities:

Analyze reported claims for accurate loss coding information
Make initial liability and damage investigation with insured, including a discussion of coverage
Draft acknowledgment/reservation of rights/declination letters and defense counsel appointment letters
Monitor and manage claims files assigned, alert and consult with supervisory counsel on those which may present UE exposure
Participate with the insured and defense counsel in developing a case resolution strategy
Evaluate budgets submitted by defense counsel for reasonableness; discuss budgets with insureds and defense counsel
Regularly review files for compliance with the agreed upon budget and strategy
Positively impact the resolution of files through early interaction, reference to ADR, mediation and effective litigation management
Recommend, establish and update reserves
Visit insureds and defense counsel; establish relationships that are beneficial to UE and aid the successful carrying out of position’s responsibilities
Provide prompt review of legal bills for reasonableness and compliance with Defense Counsel Guidelines; disallow work or expenses that do not meet criteria
Maintain accurate information in Resolutions’ databases

Contribute to the success of the geographical team by participating as needed in meetings and team projects
Provide claims insight into accounts to assist in the marketing and underwriting process

Participate in workshops and seminars including preparation of materials and presentations; provide value to members through publications and presentations
Attend seminars/conduct reading/study program to develop an area of expertise in higher education liability topic
