Court Research Attorney

Under general direction, the court research attorney performs legal research on behalf of the court by examining, analyzing, and submitting recommendations on judicial actions for criminal and civil legal matters in support of law and motion and trial calendars.
The ideal candidate is an experienced attorney with a specialization in civil and/or criminal law with extensive research and writing experience.  The candidate must possess knowledge of principles, practices, and methods of legal research, Civil, Criminal, Constitutional, and Administrative law. Must also possess knowledge of Government Code, Rules of Court, and other California statutes related to court processes. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to present clear and logical arguments to the judges and recognize and respect the limit of authority and responsibility.
Essential duties and functions include:
¨ Gather information regarding legal issues presented to the court, (e.g., motions, pleadings, and writs),  review case files, legal documents and exhibits.
¨ Identify, research, and analyze legal issues and conflicting legal opinions. Conduct self-directed, independent research.
¨ Prepare comprehensive memoranda detailing relevant legal issues,     address argument strengths/weaknesses and recommend judicial action.
¨ At the direction of the judicial officer, prepare draft court rulings, statements of decision, orders and judgments, and formal appellate bench memoranda.
¨ Confer with judges, attorneys, staff and the public on procedural matters.
¨ Advise the court on legal aspects of administrative, human resource, and operational issues. Review and advise the court on contracts.
¨ Prepare reports summarizing legislative/judicial action or trends and other matters.
¨ Update law library materials and perform other collateral services in support of the assigned caseload and judges. Liaison with online research vendor.
Compensation and benefits:
¨ Salary: $3,696 to $4,493 bi-weekly. Salary range begins with five steps with approximately 5% between each step. Annual performance reviews are conducted which may advance the employee through the steps. Salary steps 6, 7 and 8 are attained through longevity and satisfactory service.
¨ Annual paid leave benefits: 11 days vacation (accrual rate increases with longevity); 13 paid holidays; 12 days sick leave; and 80 hours of administrative leave.
¨ Health insurance: The court pays the major portion of medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and eligible dependents. The option of post-retirement medical benefits is also available upon meeting criteria.
¨ Life insurance: Term life insurance is provided for employees and eligible dependents and paid for by the court.
¨ Retirement: Social Security and the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS). The court offers two voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation plans.
