The Eric H. Holder Jr. Initiative for Civil and Political Rights Practitioner-in-Residence program offers the opportunity to spend time at Columbia University engaging in research, writing, and scholarly discussion connected to practice in the promotion of social justice. The program is intended to foster social justice scholarship grounded in practice, as well as practice informed by scholarship and critique.
The incumbent will be appointed as an Associate Research Scholar and will be expected to work on scholarly-, advocacy-, or policy-oriented papers, or books for publication, as well as develop workshops and new research agendas for undergraduate students as they engage in aspects of civic engagement, leadership and democracy, social justice, inequality, and voting rights at Columbia and beyond. For those interested, mentoring about academic scholarship and social justice work product is available, as are opportunities for presenting and obtaining feedback on draft work.
The incumbent will also have the opportunity to participate in the broader intellectual life of Columbia College and the University at large, and may deliver guest lectures or justice-related course offerings, participate in the mentoring of undergraduate students, advise on ongoing projects of the Holder Initiative, and design workshops or other events with experts from the field.
The duration of the appointment is a period of one year, which may be renewable for a second year based on funding.
A J.D. or equivalent legal degree is required. Applicants should have a minimum of 5 years of extensive professional experience; strong analytical research and writing capabilities; experience working in an interdisciplinary environment; excellent interpersonal, organization, and communication skills; and initiative, high motivation, and ability to think strategically.
