G&S has been engaged on an exclusive basis to assist a leading, on-line education partner for colleges and universities in its search for a Senior Counsel, Employment to focus on and work alongside all levels of the human resources department. The attorney in this newly created role will report directly to the General Counsel and will become a member of a dynamic, growing and closely-knit legal team that works in partnership with business units across the company.
Primary Responsibilities: Provide counsel on Title VII, FLMA, ADA, wage and hour matters, performance management, terminations, worker’s compensation, etc.; work with human resources department to develop and implement best employment practices throughout the business; provide employee trainings regarding compliance with employment policies, procedures and best practices; advise HR regarding investigations and employee resources concerns; provide counsel regarding non-U.S. employment matters; draft and review employment agreements, separation agreements, etc.; partner with outside ERISA counsel to evaluate benefit plans; and represent the company before federal and state agencies in administrative charges.
Candidate Profile Sought: 4-8 years of employment law experience gained in an AmLaw 100 firm or a combination of current in-house experience and prior law firm training in a leading labor and employment practice. Exposure to international employment issues is highly desirable. The ability to prioritize multiple projects is essential, as is the ability to provide effective legal advice that integrates legal risk with the company’s business objectives. Must be skilled at consensus building across groups, work effectively with all levels of management and staff, and demonstrate sound legal and business judgment.
Client Profile: Our client is a market leader in its field with arguably the most successful EdTech IPO to date, and it is averaging 30% year-over-year growth. The company has an “employee-focused culture” with a very collaborative and casual (yet professional) work environment. We have worked closely with this favorite corporate client for three years and have successfully assisted in expanding the legal dept. from 2 to 7 attorneys. Hours are predictable at 9am-6:30pm, and the compensation package is on higher end of the in-house scale and includes an equity component.
