ASSISTANT DEAN OF THE CAREER DEVELOPMENT OFFICE

THE ROLE
The Assistant Dean of the Career Development Office (CDO) leads that office, which provides career support for approximately 1000 JD and Master's degree candidates and is the point of contact for hundreds of employers who recruit and hire our students and graduates. In addition to leading the CDO, the Assistant Dean is responsible for employment-related reporting and initiatives, including co-curricular and professional development student programming. The Assistant Dean serves on faculty committees and other special committees that involve employment and professional development matters and collaborates with heads of other departments.  In recognition of degree to which the academic program and employment efforts are intertwined, the Assistant Dean reports to the Academic Dean.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Assistant Dean leads the CDO and oversees career/employment and student professional development efforts. Among other responsibilities, the Assistant Dean:

Articulates and executes a strategic vision for the CDO consistent with UC Hastings Law’s mission and strategic plan
Manages the CDO, including its team members, programs, policies and budget
Serves the needs of students and graduates relating to employment matters
Develops and implements strategies for student outreach and engagement
Oversees counseling of students and alumni in their career development and job search strategies and coordinates with other student-facing departments toward that end
Conceives and implements co-curricular, career-related educational programming for students
Oversees other programming for students and alumni, including the on-campus interview program and PI/PS day
Develops and maintains relationships with employers
Oversees planning and implementation of marketing strategies to expand the recruitment opportunities for students locally and nationwide for legal employers and other career paths for lawyers
Continuously ascertains best practices, assesses and re-designs existing department procedures, functions and programs as needed
As appointed by the Academic Dean, serves on faculty standing or special committees, and as the CDO representative to the Board of Governors Employment Committee
Initiates formal collaboration with other departments, including alumni and communications, as well as with student groups, such as ASUCH
Participates in efforts across the College to manage, track and report information regarding our students and graduates, e.g., to aid employment and advising efforts
Oversees employment-related reporting, including by managing the employment reporting protocol for UC Hastings Law’s primary regulator, the ABA; generates employment and other statistics for reporting to US News and NALP; and produces written reports for other purposes
Participates in professional organizations locally and nationally and keeps abreast of trends, changes and developments in recruiting, legal employment and the legal market
Provides other reports to the community, including, as requested, at board, faculty and alumni group meetings

 
REQUIREMENTS
The Assistant Dean must have the following qualifications and experiences:

A JD and is admitted to a state bar
At least three years of practice experience
At least two years of experience in career services in the legal field
Strategic vision and leadership ability
Strong ability to manage and organize time, details and projects efficiently and effectively
Strong computer skills, including working knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Office applications 
Excellent organizational, interpersonal, communication, presentation and counseling skills
Ability to interact with all segments of the legal community and provide programming and resources for a diverse law school population
Knowledge of the legal services market and employment opportunities
Ability and experience managing, training or supervising team members

 
It is not required, but is preferable if the Assistant Dean has the following additional qualifications or experiences:

More than five years of practice experience
Five or more years of experience working with law students
Demonstrated experience working with diverse communities (including counseling, outreach and programming)
Strong cross-cultural communication skills
Coaching experience and certification
Familiarity with the California legal market, including the Bay Area
Knowledge of Simplicity, a career services software platform
