General Counsel

The General Counsel (GC) for Liberty Construction will provide day to day business and legal counsel to our senior management team, including the General Manager of Liberty Construction and the Chief Financial Officer.  The GC will report directly to our General Manager of Liberty Construction with a dotted line into the EVP, General Counsel of Suffolk.  This position is a key member of Liberty’s senior management team.

We are a growing company with headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts and offices in the Southeast and on the West Coast.
 
Responsibilities: 

Provides advice to management on legal issues concerning contracts, claims, general commercial/contractual negotiations, employment issues, compliance and other legal matters
Serves as a critical partner with management in the negotiation of business deals and assists with the negotiation of construction management agreements, subcontracts and other legal agreements
Proactively works with management to identify risk and implement risk mitigation plans
Works to implement and enforce a comprehensive compliance program to include Code of Conduct, business ethics, antitrust, conflicts of interest and others where applicable.
Monitors changes in applicable law and advises management regarding the implications of such changes
Handles legal inquiries from the organization and issues legal opinions and summaries as necessary
Manages outside counsel
Drafts letters relating to contract administration and other issues for project teams to send to subcontractors, clients and other third parties
Works closely with management to resolve claims with third parties
Travels regularly to offices within the region to collaborate with management and project teams
Regularly visits construction sites to collaborate with project teams, resolve legal issues and mitigate risk

Qualifications:
 
The qualified candidate will have a minimum of 10 years’ experience in construction law or a directly related field. Top law firm experience and some relevant in-house experience preferred but not required.
 
Licensing, certification, registrations:

Requires bachelor’s degree from a 4-year college or university and a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school

Working Conditions: 
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time; talk or hear; perform fine motor, hand and finger skills in the use of a keyboard, telephone, or writing. The employee is frequently required to stands; walk; and reach with arms and/or hands. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee will spend their time in an office environment with a quiet to moderate noise level. Job site walking.
