POSITION: Assistant Municipal Attorney, Department of Law-Civil Rights Litigator -General and Municipal Litigation Attorney -Transactional Attorney
SALARY RANGE: $86,811-$112,796*(Unclassified)
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The City of Trenton, Department of Law is seeing (3) experienced attorneys who present excellent litigation, research, writing and communication skills. Under the direction of the Director and Deputy Director of Law, the Assistant Attorneys shall handle specific assignments and provide legal counsel for the City on a wide range of legal matters.
Additionally, the attorneys hired for the positions will be expected to participate in the defense of the City of Trenton against lawsuits, inclusive of litigation and trial of cases and to provide legal counsel to the City's Administration departments, divisions, City Council, City Clerk, Purchasing Agent, and City Employees under the direction and supervision of the City Attorney.
REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION: Graduation from an American Bar Association-approved law school.
EXPERIENCE:
Civil Rights Litigator: Six (6) years of civil rights litigationand trial experience under 42 USC section 1983 and State of New Jersey civil right statues, defending government entities,employees and officials in all areas of civil rights including police abuse, excessive force, false arrests and detention, illegal/improper searches, discrimination, violation of constitutional rights and related matters. Serves as Senior Litigator in hearings, trials, and court proceedings.
General and Municipal Litigation Attorney: Three (3) years of defending municipalities, counties, state government, school districts, police departments and other government entities in matters involving the areas of employment, labor relations, and civil litigation. Position includes arbitrations, administrative hearings, and civil litigation related to employment and other municipal litigation. Preparation of motions, discoveries, and depositions is required.
Transactional Attorney:Five (5) years of handling real estate and housing matters including but not limited to real estate closings, sales, acquisitions, leasing, financing, zoning, land use, construction, tax appeals, condemnations, foreclosures and bankruptcies. The Attorney will also assist in complicated negotiations of planning, construction and redevelopment projects.
LICENSE: Applicants must be licensed and in good standing in New Jersey and federal courts. Appointees will be required to possess a valid driver's license.
SPECIAL NOTE: Newly hired employees must submit to and pass a thorough background check that will include fingerprinting, physical examination and drug screen test. All data received will be kept in strict confidence. Each applicant will be informed of the test and screening results.
RESIDENCY ORDINANCE: The City of Trenton has a residency ordinance that requires newly hired persons to reside in the City of Trenton on or after ninety days (90) from effective dateof employment. Failure to meet this requirement in a timely manner may result in termination of employment with the City.
