Columbia's Office of the General Counsel currently consists of nineteen attorneys providing a broad array of legal services for the University. The Office is seeking an attorney whose responsibilities will focus on employment law/human resources matters, avoiding and mitigating human resources/employment related risks and advising on and resolving personnel-related disputes. The successful candidate will have the ability to analyze complex issues and react appropriately; exercise excellent judgment; handle multiple matters; offer counsel to University officials, faculty and researchers; use outside counsel in a cost effective manner; and work independently. The attorney will be based at the University's Morningside Heights campus providing services for all University campuses, including the Columbia University Irving Medical Center, working independently and with other lawyers in the office on complex and high-level matters. RESPONSIBILITIES• Provide advice and counsel to Human Resources professionals and managers throughout the University on a wide range of labor and employment matters; • Develop litigation strategy and oversee outside counsel in employment-related litigation matters; • Participate in mediations; and prepare responses to the New York State Division of Human Rights ("NYSDHR"), the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ("EEOC") and the Department of Education office of Civil Rights ("OCR") complaints; • Develop training materials and provide regular training sessions for faculty and staff and provide ongoing specialized training for the Human Resources staff on a wide variety of employment and labor topics;• Support all University related legal efforts as needed. QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS• Educationo A Juris Doctor degree from a nationally recognized law school with excellent academic credentials in law school and in undergraduate studies.• Experience: o Five to nine plus years of practice experience in employment law, including employment litigation and counseling experience;o Significant knowledge of relevant federal, state and local employment law and familiarity in all areas of EEO and employment-related compliance regimes;o Ability to analyze complex situations and react appropriately; o Ability to exercise sound judgment after researching and interpreting relevant facts; o Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines; o Ability to supervise outside counsel in a cost-effective manner; o Ability to work with minimal supervision and to handle multiple high priority tasks simultaneously; o Excellent drafting skills;o Confidence and judgment necessary to act pragmatically;o Ability and desire to function collaboratively;o Openness to growth and learning in a team environment, consistent with the goals and principles that guide the General Counsel's Office;o Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate easily with colleagues and internal clients;o Must be admitted to the New York State Bar or admitted within one year of hire; o Higher Education and/or other in-house experience preferred.
