Associate General Counsel(Posting)Grade: 888Department: Office of the General CounselSalary: Commensurate with ExperienceColumbia's Office of the General Counsel currently consists of nineteen attorneys providing a broad array of legal services for the University. The Office is seeking an attorney to work on a wide range of issues, primarily focused on internal investigations, research misconduct, research compliance and policies, regulatory matters, government audits, and oversight of outside counsel in complex litigation (including false claims act matters). The successful candidate will have the ability to analyze complex issues and react appropriately; exercise excellent judgment; handle multiple matters; offer counsel to University officials, faculty and researchers; use outside counsel in a cost effective manner; and work independently. The attorney will be based at the University's Morningside Heights campus providing services for all University campuses, including the Columbia University Irving Medical Center, working independently and with other lawyers in the office on complex and high-level matters. RESPONSIBILITIES" Conduct and/or oversee and support internal investigations;" Oversee and advise on research misconduct and research conflicts of interests issues;" Advise internal clients (including research compliance staff and faculty) on compliance issues related to government supported research grants and contracts;" Provide legal, administrative and academic team members with support in response to government inquiries;" Respond to inquiries from internal clients on regulatory matters; " Oversee outside counsel on complex government litigation (including false claims acts matters), investigations and audits;" Develop and draft policies in support of research activities, including compliance and training;" Handle research compliance matters, including matters related to human subject and animal research;" Support all University related legal efforts as needed.QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS" Educationo A Juris Doctor degree from a nationally recognized law school with excellent academic credentials in law school and in undergraduate studies.Experience: o Five to nine years plus of practice experience in U.S. Attorney's Office or other government agency and/or extensive law firm or in-house experience in internal investigations and/or compliance;o Knowledge of federal law and agency operations, relating to false claims act, conflicts of interest, disclosure and investigations; o Ability to analyze complex situations and react appropriately; o Ability to exercise sound judgment after researching and interpreting relevant facts; o Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines; o Ability to supervise outside counsel in a cost-effective manner; o Ability to work with minimal supervision and to handle multiple high priority tasks simultaneously;o Excellent drafting skills;o Confidence and judgment necessary to act pragmatically;o High level of intellectual curiosity;o Ability and desire to function collaboratively;o Openness to growth and learning in a team environment, consistent with the goals and principles that guide the General Counsel's Office;o Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate easily with colleagues and internal clients;o Must be admitted to the New York State Bar or admitted within one year of hire;o Higher Education and/or other in-house experience a plus.To apply, visit the Columbia University website:jobs.columbia.edu/applicants/Central?quickFind=505485 is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer --Race/Gender/Disability/Veteran.
