SUMMARY
Responsible for assigning litigation matters to staff attorneys and supervising the staff attorneys handling of such matters. Participates in determining legal matters to be referred to outside counsel and serves as liaison to outside counsel in the handling of such litigation matters, including personal injury and employment litigation.
Responsible for providing timely responses to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission when requested. Provides advice and guidance on personnel and labor issues as they arise. Responsible for directing the Authority’s responses to open records requests and provides direct oversight of support personnel assigned to gathering materials responsive to such requests.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises and directs litigation activities.
Provides counsel and advice on legal matters to management and staff.
Acts on behalf of the Chief Counsel when requested.
Ensures a consistent approach of staff counsel in handing of litigation matters and responsible for reviewing monthly litigation status reports and providing guidance to staff counsel on litigation matters.
Works with Risk Management in assessing potential liabilities in litigation matters and setting appropriate reserves to protect the financial viability of the Authority.
Provides guidance to MARTA’s Police Services on a variety of issues relating to law enforcement.
Manages adherence to the Georgia Open Records Act.8. Performs other related duties, as assigned by Chief Counsel.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises attorneys assigned to litigation within the Legal Department and provide direction to outside counsel on litigation strategy. Directly supervises staff dealing with Open Records Act.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
College graduate with LL.B. or J.D. Degree. Must be a graduate of an accredited law school.Minimum of 8 years experience in the practice of law. Minimum of 4 years of litigation experience.Experience in planning/assigning/directing work of subordinate attorneys desired.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must be a member of the Georgia Bar Association.
