In-House Trial Lawyer

Under limited direction of the Subrogation Department managing attorney, performs duties of legal counsel in the prosecution of civil subrogation claims, and representation of the Company in a variety of courts of law, and other related appearances.
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: 

Handles the investigation of potential subrogation claims and all phases of civil cases in state and federal courts relating to subrogation rights arising from payment of worker’ compensation benefits.
Prosecution of civil litigation claims involving products liability, negligence, and premises liability actions.
Handles all aspects of discovery, including written and documentary discovery, takes depositions, analyzes records, and testimony, prepares and files related reports.
Represents the Company in appearances at court hearings and conferences; prepares and files related reports.
Researches and prepares complex pleadings for cases in state and federal civil courts.
Provides advice, training, and recommendations on claim handling strategies and tactics to relating to subrogation matters.
Performs legal research at all levels, from advising clients through the appellate procedures.
Acts as inter-departmental training seminar leader
May assist in training other attorneys and staff relating to subrogation matters.
Apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
Responds positively to direction and critique of performance.
Consistently maintain professional and appropriate demeanor.
Performs other duties as assigned. 

Education, Skills and Experience Requirements

Law school graduate and member in good standing of the California State Bar.
At least 5 years’ experience as a Trial Attorney on civil litigation matters, with plaintiff’s litigation experience preferred.
Lead counsel on at least 5 jury trials to verdict is required.  Additional experience as first- or second-chair counsel in jury or court trials is preferred.
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing, in an articulate, persuasive, precise and professional manner.
Experience with training small groups in current legal practices and procedures in the field of subrogation.
Ability to lift legal files, including documents and exhibits, up to a weight of 30 pounds.
Must be willing and able to travel extensively using all means of public transportation, as well as capable of prolonged automobile driving, in excess of three hours a day, to widely dispersed venues.
Valid Driver License in good standing.
