The Justice Department on Wednesday announced an $8.3 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma as part of a deal in which the company will plead guilty to criminal charges “related to its marketing of the addictive painkiller” OxyContin. Purdue’s owners, the Sackler family, will pay a separate $225 million civil penalty.
