VP, Underwriting Counsel

Essential Job FunctionsProvide proactive and timely legal counsel to business partners in support of strategic and tactical business initiativesAssist in the preparation of all required supporting insurance product documentation, comparisons, explanatory memorandums, annotated contracts, and disclosures in furtherance of underwriting strategies, loss considerations, and state mandatesSupport the underwriting team in the development and drafting of insurance policy language for new product development as well as account-specific transactionsConsult and provide interpretation on language development and analysis and ensure consistency of language by line of business throughout commercial or financial productsStay current on and present periodically to underwriters, as warranted, on current and emerging underwriting, risk, and coverage trendsIdentify and mitigate risk to the Company by finding legally compliant solutions to business issuesDevelop and maintain collaborative relationships with management and internal business clients, agents, outside counsel, and Company partnersAdhere to standards, guidelines, and templates for product developmentSupport regulatory and state filings group as neededKey QualificationsAdmitted to practice law with 5+ years of insurance product drafting experience.Experience and/or knowledge of commercial insurance products, including casualty, professional/management liability, or other specialty markets is a plus, as is experience with state filings of insurance policies.Superior oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Ability to work collaboratively across all levels of the organizationStrong intellectual curiosity and desire to learn and developInsurance policy coverage analysis experience.Knowledge of admitted and surplus lines commercial products, including commercial, professional liability, and specialty insurance.This position is based in our Berkeley Heights, NJ office.  The above description describes the general nature and level of work performed in this role.
