ADJUNCT ACADEMIC SKILLS INSTRUCTOR The University of California College of the Law, San Francisco (“UC Law SF,” formerly “UC Hastings Law”) was founded in 1878 as the law department of the University of California and was the first law school in California. Over the years, it has built a legacy and reputation of being a preeminent institution comprised of renowned faculty committed to the study of legal theory and research, preparing students for careers in the judicial system, public service, and industry. UC Law SF is hiring a part-time Academic Skills Lecturer for the Fall 2023 semester (July 1, 2023 – December 31, 2023) to support our innovative 1L curriculum in the fall term. Position details are described below. The Position: The Adjunct Academic Skills Instructor will be a member of UC Law SF’s Office for Academic Skills Instruction & Support (“OASIS”), a department that has grown in recent years along with the College’s ongoing efforts to systematically and pervasively teach core academic skills, provide effective academic support to those who need it, and better prepare our graduates to pass the bar exam on their first attempt. OASIS faculty work with students both in the classroom—academic skills instruction has been embedded into various parts of the curriculum—and by way of a rich array of co-curricular academic support programming and increased opportunities for all students to receive individualized academic support counseling and feedback. Under the direction and supervision of the Associate Dean for Academic Skills Instruction & Support, the Adjunct Academic Skills Instructor will deliver academic skills programming, provide academic support to individual students, and collaborate with faculty in providing in-class academic skills instruction. Core job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: · Hold individual and group office hours, primarily with 1L students who seek academic support on their class preparation materials, course outlines, legal analysis skills, exam writing, and time management/study skills · Provide individualized written feedback on student work, including on doctrinal writing assignments and practice exam answers · Develop and teach co-curricular workshops designed to strengthen students’ core academic skills, including especially legal analysis and exam writing · Collaborate with doctrinal 1L faculty in designing skills-focused lessons that utilize active learning techniques, and potentially teach or co-teach some of those lessons · Teach 1L students during the JD Orientation introductory skills including reading, briefing, and analogical reasoning Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must have a J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school and be admitted or eligible to practice law, preferably in California. The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys working in a supportive, collaborative environment, and who has the following knowledge, skills and experience: · At least 1-3 years of practice experience · Strong legal writing and analysis skills · Experience with creative teaching/tutoring methods that focus on skills development · Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff Compensation and Time Commitment: The position is part-time (0.5 FTE, 20 hours/week). Compensation is $23,750 for the 6-month period July 1 – December 31 (annualized at $95,000), plus benefits.
