The New York State Unified Court System is one of the largest court systems in the nation with over 16,000 judges and non‑judicial employees. We are seeking a forward‑thinking leader who will oversee and direct the activities of the Office of Court Administration’s legal office in New York. As the head of OCA Counsel’s Office, responsibilities include providing leadership, management and legal expertise to a team of over 20 attorneys and support staff that serves as the law department of the Office of Court Administration. Counsel is responsible to the Chief Administrator for providing confidential legal advice relating to policy formulation and the development and implementation of programs and administrative procedures in the unified court system. The Counsel directs the activities of the Office of Court Administration’s legal office, supervises its professional and support staff, and performs other related duties. This position provides advice, guidance and support to management and the executive leadership team in formulating and promulgating uniform court policy. OCA Counsel’s Office is multifaceted with a broad range of responsibilities, providing legal assistance on all administrative matters affecting the Unified Court System (UCS) including: • Litigation: The Office represents and coordinates the representation of the UCS, judges and nonjudicial employees when they are sued in state and federal court proceedings. • Legislation: In its legislative capacity, through the Legislative Counsel, is responsible for preparing the court system’s Legislative Program and for providing on-going contact with the Governor’s office, Legislature and lobbyists to assist in effecting the enactment of the Legislative Program into law. • Court Rules: Drafting the administrative and procedural rules affecting the operation of the courts. • Contracts & Procurement: Drafting the administrative and procedural rules affecting the operation of the courts. • Freedom of Information Law: FOIL requests for administrative records. • Ethics: Advising judges and nonjudicial employees on their ethical obligations under the Rules Governing Judicial Conduct and the Rules Governing Conduct of nonjudicial Court employees. Candidates should have a proven track record of leadership in the legal profession, demonstrated success working with management and executive teams, strong verbal and written communication skills, and excellent interpersonal skills. • QUALIFICATIONS: Admission to the New York State Bar and ten (10) years of experience in the legal profession. • BASE SALARY: $187,771 - $209,000 + $4,635 LOCATION PAY (Salary determined upon qualifications and experience of successful candidate) We offer a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
