The Office of Attorney Ethics (OAE) acts as the investigative and prosecutorial arm of the Supreme Court of New Jersey in discharging the Supreme Court's constitutional responsibility to supervise and discipline New Jersey attorneys. The mission of the OAE is expressed by the New Jersey Supreme Court in its precedent: to preserve public confidence in the Bar and to protect the public from lawyers who fail to comport with the high professional standards articulated in the New Jersey Rules of Professional Conduct. This position presents a unique opportunity to be part of a team of service minded professionals within the OAE who support the Statewide District Ethics Committees (DECs). The New Jersey Judiciary, Office of Attorney Ethics, Supreme Court of New Jersey, seeks an attorney to act as a Deputy Ethics Counsel in the District Ethics Committee Unit within the OAE. This position assists the Statewide Ethics Coordinator with the roughly 700 volunteer members (roughly 570 attorneys and 130 non-attorneys) of the District Ethics Committees (DECs) and the 55 DEC officers (all volunteer attorneys) who serve on the 18 DECs throughout NJ. The position requires the candidate to be skilled at analyzing different legal and factual situations quickly, to be followed by the drafting of concise summaries and recommendations for proposed response or action. The candidate must be able to write with insight, clarity, speed and accuracy. The selected candidate will be assigned to designated District Ethics Committees as the key staff member who follows up with Officers and members to ensure the timely processing and disposition of the cases pursuant to R. 1:20-8. Moreover, the candidate will be expected to appear before the Disciplinary Review Board and the Supreme Court to litigate cases arising from the District Ethics Committees. REMOTE WORK: The Judiciary currently offers a hybrid work schedule, and this position may qualify for up to 2 days of remote work outside of Judiciary buildings. To participate in this program, you will be required to have high speed home internet access. Example of Duties: * Act as the Deputy to the Statewide Coordinator within the DEC Unit. * Prepare filings and/or review the legal sufficiency of case documents to be submitted to the Disciplinary Review Board or the Supreme Court, and prepare for and appear for oral argument on such cases when assigned by the Director or Statewide Ethics Coordinator * Act as primary liaison attorney responding to questions and requests for assistance or response from half of the 18 District Ethics Committees * Attend District Ethics Committee meetings for all districts on a rotating basis throughout the year * Provide whatever support may be needed to make sure disciplinary investigations and hearings proceed forward in the District Ethics Committees in accord with the time goals set by the Supreme Court * Review and screen attorney ethics grievances * Review and assess the legal sufficiency of investigation reports and disposition documents * Conduct the legal analysis and recommend courses of action in cases proposed for diversion or other disposition on consent * Assist in the coordination of outreach to and recruitment of new members for the District Ethics Committees * Prepare and participate in OAE training and legal education programs for the District Ethics Committees and other audiences * Respond to inquiries from the DECs and members of the public, and others who may call or write to inquire about or request action from the attorney disciplinary system * Use of Excel to create reports, charts, and statistical analysis for the Director and Statewide Coordinator * Provide such other assistance as may be requested or assigned by the Director or Statewide Ethics Coordinator Salary range is $90,333.78 - $124,992.28. For newly hired individuals, the starting salary will normally be at the minimum of the salary range. Job Requirements: Graduation from an American Bar Association-approved law school and three (3) years of experience as an Attorney-at-Law performing legal research and analyzing and evaluating legal documents, rules, regulations, and/or legislation. Experience with Appellate Advocacy and Caseload Management preferred. Substitution: One year of experience as a Judicial Law Clerk may be substituted for one year of the required experience. License: Attorney-at-Law with a plenary license in the State of New Jersey and having Supreme Court Good Standing Status of Active. Residency Law: Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), also known as the “New Jersey First Act,” all persons newly hired by the Judiciary must establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey. Authorization to Work: US citizenship is not required.
