The New Jersey Turnpike Authority is seeking Deputy Director of Law at its headquarters in Woodbridge, NJ. The Deputy Director will serve as co-counsel and legal advisor for the NJTA. This position reports to the Director of Law (General Counsel) and is responsible for assisting in the efficient and effective daily operation of the Department of Law; overseeing the workload of staff attorneys, supervising outside counsel assignments, providing legal advice and support to protect and further the interests of NJTA. The ideal candidate should have diversified legal experience and/or knowledge concerning the subject matters described below. The selected candidate shall take on other tasks as assigned by the Director of the Law. Additional duties can include providing legal advice and as assigned, representation of the Authority including, but not limited to:Assist the Director of Law in the provision of legal advice to commissioners, departments and division heads and other Authority personnel on legal questions related to their job duties and responsibilities.Assist in the daily management and supervision of Law Department personnel including staff attorneys, paralegals, law clerks, and administrative support staff.Assist in the broader management of the Department of Law, including policy compliance oversight, performance reviews, hiring, and preparation of the Department’s budget.Perform the job duties of the Director of Law in the Director’s absence or when otherwise assigned to do so.Provide supervision and direction to outside counsel in the handling of all assigned legal matters.Coordinate across departments and serve as a resource for NJTA Directors, managers, and staff to provide legal advice and guidance as requested.Coordinate closely with the Department of Human Resources on matters such as investigations, employee discipline, and Authority policies and procedures.Remain current on all ongoing NJTA programs, projects, and initiatives to identify and address potential legal issues.Monitor NJTA staff compliance with all applicable laws and regulations and remain current on legislative changes that affect NJTA’s operations.Work to ensure harmonious relationships are maintained by the Department of Law with all NJTA departments and employees.Handle legal matters and perform the job duties like those assigned to other staff attorneys.A high level of discretion and confidentiality is required.Minimum Qualifications:Juris Doctorate from an institution maintaining proper state and American Bar Association accreditations.Licensed to practice law in the State of New Jersey and eligible to appear in court.Ten (10) years’ experience as a practicing attorney, including at least three (3) years’ experience in the management of attorneys and a legal staff including assignment and monitoring of caseloads.Excellent written and oral communication skills.Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to maintain harmonious working relationships with members of the Law Department and other departments throughout NJTA, and with assigned outside counsel.Must have a valid driver’s license and/or the ability to procure his/her own means of transportation to and from court and legal proceedings.
